On July 10, 2018, historic downtown Sun Prairie suffered a devastating gas explosion that destroyed numerous businesses and killed one, volunteer firefighter Captain Cory Barr. In response, Patrick DePula of Salvatore’s Tomato Pies (whose Sun Prairie location was damaged), Wisconsin Distributors and Potosi Brewing Company came together to create the Sun Prairie Strong Prairie Pils, a variation of an easy-drinking Czech-style pilsner, which was a favorite beer style of Captain Barr. In addition, Madison design firm Art and Sons donated their skills to create the special label.
The Sun Prairie Strong Prairie Pils sold out within weeks and raised $2,746 for the Sun Prairie Disaster Relief Fund to rebuild the city’s historic downtown.
“Wisconsin Distributors, located in Sun Prairie, is an important partner of the Potosi Brewing Company and many of their employees live in the community and some are on the volunteer fire department,” said Dave Fritz, president of the Potosi Foundation, which owns the Potosi Brewing Company. “Their lives were changed forever by the loss of Captain Cory Barr and seeing firsthand the devastation to the heart of Sun Prairie. We hope the Sun Prairie Strong beer is used to help raise money, but more importantly, to bring people together to support each other, the Barr family, other injured first responders and the community.”
