Eleventh-Hour Gifts

Need a last minute gift for that office white elephant party or unexpected holiday relative? (Or maybe you’re simply a procrastinator, like me.) Here are some of Edible Madison’s staff favorites that can be had on short notice and cost less than $20.


A pint of Wisconsin maple syrup makes a lovely (and quick!) gift. My favorite is Maple Valley Certified Organic Grade B Maple Syrup, which is produced by the Organic Maple Cooperative based in Cashton. Visit their website to find out where to buy it or to have it shipped.

Another of my go-to gifts are handcrafted soaps and body care products. Two of my local favorites are LuSa Organics and Naughty Goat from Under a Rock Farm.

Hot mulled wine is one of my favorite drinks of the season, and it’s easy to make a DIY mulled wine 'kit.’ Get ¼ or ½ cup mulling spice from the bulk spice bin, put it in a clear bag or small Mason jar, and dress it up with pretty ribbon, twine or burlap. Then print off and attach these instructions: Pour 2 bottles of your favorite dry to medium-dry red wine into a pot and add ¼ cup mulling spice. Cover and bring to a simmer (do not boil). Simmer 15 minutes, then remove spices to prevent bitterness. Keep warm, covered, on low heat or transfer to a carafe. To serve, ladle mulled wine into a favorite mug, bring cup to face, breathe deeply, sip, savor.

When heading out to a holiday dinner party, I reach for my favorite beer: Madtown Nutbrown from Madison-based Ale Asylum. Versatile and complex, it complements a range of heavy winter dishes. Also try their seasonal offering, Mercy, a Belgian-style Grand Cru, which pairs excellently with fish or lighter fare. If you're feeling extra generous, spring for a growler from Ale Asylum's tasting room at their brewery on Pankratz Street. No giftwrap required.

I can’t get enough of Cesar’s Cheese Queso Oaxaca, a Mexican-style hand-stretched string cheese. It won second place at the American Cheese Society competition this year for good reason—the flavor is clean and fresh, not too salty, and it is the stringiest string cheese I’ve ever had. Cesar Luis learned his techniques from his grandmother while growing up in Mexico, and now that he’s set up shop in Wisconsin, Cesar uses Sassy Cow milk and makes his cheese at the Sassy Cow Creamery in Columbus. Everyone has a chocolate lover in their life who would enjoy a 5-pack sampler from Gail Ambrosius containing Bittersweet, Nib, Three Hot Nuts, Cherry Almond and Espresso— all made in Madison using ethically-sourced cocoa. For any white wine lover (like myself), the White Riesling from Wollershiem Winery in Prairie du Sac is a perfect gift (and goes pretty well with the chocolate, if I do say). With floral aromas of jasmine and undertones of peach and apricots, this wine will trigger memories of summer well into the winter months.
