At one time or another, we’ve all admired (or envied) a friend or neighbor’s seemingly weed-free, organized, even artistic garden, which to our subconscious dismay, was also producing a bounty of fresh vegetables. While many of us may want to grow our own food, the prospect of starting and maintaining a garden can be daunting to someone whose green thumb tends to turn brown by July.

Thankfully, Community GroundWorks at Troy Gardens has created a solution. Madison FarmWorks is a unique business which will design, install and even maintain organic vegetable gardens of any size at homes, businesses and schools to supplement local food production right here in Madison. “We’re bringing farming skills to a gardening scale,” says Megan Cain, program manager for Madison FarmWorks. “We saw Madison FarmWorks as a way to empower and educate about how a backyard garden really can be productive and provide a lot of a household’s own food.”

Wondering when to pull carrots, what to plant after the first harvest, how to build soil fertility, or simply how to choose what to plant in the first place? The program also provides group or one-on-one urban gardener trainings tailored to the needs and goals of both the greenhorn and the weathered vine. Or hire an experienced gardener to maintain your garden while you sit back and enjoy your backyard bounty.
