Garden-based learning is becoming more and more popular in today’s educational systems, for good reason. Children learn best from hands-on experience, and a garden setting can provoke inquiry about everything from the sciences and healthy living to more heady topics like sustainability and food security.

Building on research showing that kids can also focus better after they’ve had physical activity, Madison Area GROW (Grass Roots | Outdoor Wonder) Coalition (growmadison.net) has embarked on an exciting project to embed garden-based learning into our K-8 schools. The coalition is helping five Madison Metropolitan School District schools install gardens this year, with ten more over the next two years. We are excited to see this program bear fruit (and vegetables!) in the coming seasons!
