Details
Oregano is of the same genus as marjoram but has a stronger, sharp, sometimes bitter quality. Oregano is an annual in our region and has tough, woody stems. The leaves can be used fresh or dried for use all year long. When purchasing, make sure the leaves are fresh and the stems aren’t brown or shriveling. Oregano is easy to grow in windowsill boxes or countertop herb gardens. The dried oregano found in supermarkets is actually most often a combination or oregano, marjoram and thyme, so keep in mind your home-dried oregano will have a different—but true—oregano flavor.
Nutrition: Oregano is a nutrient dense spice, including vitamins K and E, manganese, iron and calcium.
