Quivey’s Grove

Back of the House

We go behind the scenes at Quivey’s Grove in Fitchberg to learn more about its historic roots and pure, Wisconsin heart.

When we asked Governor Evers where in Wisconsin he likes to eat, he told us that he and his wife recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary at Quivey’s Grove. So we couldn’t resist checking it out.

For those unfamiliar, Quivey’s Grove is situated on a unique garden property in Fitchburg and touts authentic Wisconsin dishes with a twist. On the property is a fieldstone mansion turned fine-dining restaurant and a horse stable turned casual grill. Both original structures were built circa 1855 and transformed into their modern-day uses in 1980 when they were purchased by restaurateur and lover of historic places, Joe Garton.

When we visited, we first stopped at the Stone House restaurant, the pleasantly old-fashioned mansion. Our winding tour took us up and down staircases, through a puzzle of private dining rooms, and eventually connected—via a dimly lit underground, stone-faced tunnel—to the Stable Grill, which dons a rustic pub-like atmosphere, with a long, shining brass bar to boot.

By far, our favorite moments were spent in the Stone House kitchen alongside Sous Chef Evelia Hernandez, who started at Quivey’s Grove when she was just 20 years old and 11 months pregnant with her son. Evelia has now been working at Quivey’s Grove for 24 years, and her son, now grown, and Evelia’s sister both work alongside her in the kitchen. Executive Chef Scott Roe also boasts a notable tenure of 34 years. It was clear to us that Evelia, Scott and the team were proud of their long- standing at Quivey’s Grove, and the familial feeling was truly remarkable.
