Details
English or garden peas are the peas that must be shelled before eating. They are also the kind found frozen in the supermarkets. Snow peas are the flat pods often seen in Chinese dishes. Sugar snap peas are the sweetest variety and are delicious raw or just lightly cooked so they’re heated through but still have their “snap.”
Fun fact: Don’t feel like you’re committing a crime when purchasing frozen peas. Frozen peas were packaged at the peak of freshness, which also locks in their flavor. It’s an easy way to have peak-season peas in the middle of winter.
Nutrition: As a legume, peas are very nutritious and low calorie. They contain quite the variety of vitamins and minerals: protein, dietary fiber, vitamin C, thiamine, vitamin B6, folic acid, iron, niacin, riboflavin, magnesium and potassium.
