48 Hours In and Around Mount Horeb

Notable Edibles

There’s plenty to do in this small town that’s only a short hop outside of Madison.

Getting There

Mount Horeb is located on Highway 151/18 between Verona and Dodgeville.

Build up the Appetite

Take a bike ride or walk along the flat Military Ridge State Trail, a one-time railroad bed and part of Wisconsin’s Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Fish for trout or bass at Stewart Lake County Park, the first county park in Dane County. Or head a bit west to Blue Mounds State Park and Cave of the Mounds National Natural Landmark.

For the Young and Young-at-Heart

Give the kiddos a chance to hold a baby chick or lamb, see a goat or cow be milked and take a hay ride at Havens Petting Farm, operated by Logan and Sarah Havens on the farmette where Logan grew up.

Don't Miss

The Trollway, aka Main Street, lined with life-size trolls carved out of tree trunks by sculptor Michael Feeney, earning Mount Horeb the distinction of “Troll Capital of the World.”

Local Libations

After a day out playing or shopping, wind down with a locally crafted wine or beer at Fisher King Winery or Grumpy Troll Brew Pub.

Chow Down

Schubert’s Downtown Restaurant has been making food the old-fashioned way for more than 100 years and takes pride in supporting local growers and artisanal and organic products. Hit them up for Scandinavian baked treats or a full breakfast.

Treat Yourself

Sjölinds Chocolate House not only serves craft beers, artisan coffee and local, organic fruits and veggies, but they make their own chocolate “from bean to bar.”

Rest and Revive

Prevailing Winds Lodge, run by the Wann family, is a rustic-elegant and peaceful bed-and-breakfast with a commitment to supporting local food producers and businesses. The innkeepers use sustainable land management practices on their 40 acres, such as water catchment systems and composting, and they maintain an organic garden and free-range chickens on-site.
