The Flavor of Wisconsin - For Kids

Even as an adult, opening The Flavor of Wisconsin for Kids made me smile right away. Authors Terese Allen and Bobbie Malone bring boring ol’ history lessons to life with a tone that’s anything but textbook and oldtimey photographs of Wisconsinites and their food. (One from 1945 of kindergartners wearing paper chef hats baking a “yummy pumpkin pie” was particularly adorable.) Especially interesting is the section on the foods of our Native American and immigrant ancestors and how communities across the state are keeping these important traditions alive. But this book won’t be relegated to the history bookshelf after reading—fully half the book is kid-friendly recipes, which means you’ll be keeping this one in the kitchen, preferably on a low shelf so certain little fingers can join the cooking fun.
