Food Stamps to be Accepted for CSA Shares in 2010

Notable Edibles

MACSAC has secured a major win for low-income families: healthy and local CSA shares.

After a five year journey, Madison Area Community Supported Agriculture Coalition (MACSAC) has accomplished a major win for low-income families involved in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) who want to put quality, nutritious food on their families’ tables. Starting this summer, SNAP food stamp vouchers will be accepted to purchase shares in any of the 42 CSA farms in the MACSAC coalition.

“Fresh fruits and veggies are often the first to be dropped from shopping lists when budgets are tight,” says Gini Knight, community program manager of MACSAC. “Making it possible for SNAP participants to be involved in CSAs is an important step toward both supporting local foods and healthier families.” For details about the new program, contact Gini at MACSAC: 608-226-0300, gini@macsac.org.
