Kickapoo CoffeeKickapoo Coffee, homegrown in the little burg of Viroqua, has ventured wide-eyed into the bright city lights of New York City—or at least their beans have. This past autumn, Urban Outfitters opened its first coffee bar in one of its NYC stores, serving—you guessed it—Kickapoo Coffee.
But this isn’t only because Wisconsin native Benjamin Schlief is involved with the new venture. Clearly they make high-quality coffee, too. No beans about it (sorry, I had to!). Co-owners Caleb Nicholes and T.J. Semanchin pay careful attention to sourcing certified organic whenever possible, with a special focus on sourcing from democratically-run coffee cooperatives to ensure the growers are treated fairly and have a say in where their coffee goes.
Thanks to this close attention on sourcing as well as great roasting, Kickapoo Coffee was named 2010 Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine, landed a Good Food Award in 2013 and was named “one of the best coffee roasters in the U.S. right now” by Complex Magazine this past September. Kudos to Kickapoo Coffee for spreading your wings!
