Publisher’s Letter: Summer 2011

Publisher's Letter

In a reality where the majority of our time is spent working, it’s the people surrounding us who often make it meaningful and enjoyable. I’ve been very fortunate to be part of work communities on a mission, with people who are truly inspiring and accomplish their work with a good sense of humor and willingness to learn along the way. I love working in groups who share a unifying cause and use their knowledge and passion to create positive social change. And when I’m having a not-so-great day, there’s nothing that can bring me back to center like the encouraging words (or wisecracks) of a colleague, reminding me that even when challenges arise, our mission and vision for leaving the world better than we inherited it will prevail.

Edible Madison’s mission is to demonstrate how supporting and being involved in our local food movement is critically important for the overall well-being of our economy, environment and health. We accomplish this through food education and by telling the stories of our region’s food, agri-culture and people. We take our mission seriously and work diligently to bring it to life everyday.

So when Edible Madison and the entire family of Edible Communities publications (67 and counting) recently received the first-ever James Beard Foundation “Publication of the Year” award, we were grateful to receive affirmation that we’re on the right track. Everyone in the Edible community is incredibly honored by this prestigious recognition. Together, we’re making an impact within and beyond Southern Wisconsin.

As we celebrate our first year of publishing Edible Madison, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to have meaningful work that often feels like play. It has been an incredible journey with a community of many talented, passionate and kind people in our region and nationwide. Without our contributors, advisors, advertisers and all of the people responsible for our burgeoning local food movement, this publication would not be possible. Thank you all for your support.

We hope you’ll join us in our celebration of community as you read this anniversary issue. Within, you’ll find stories that highlight the spirit of community, from a “superhero cheesemaker” (p. 14) to do-it-yourself food adventures (p. 22 and p. 27) designed to spur community-building in your own kitchen and at the table. And our fingers are crossed that after reading “Restoring Our Sense of Place” you’ll be inspired to nurture community by sending us your own foodshed mental map (how-to instructions on p. 32).

Please mark your calendars! On Wednesday, July 6, we’re having an anniversary celebration at the Underground Kitchen (127 E. Mifflin, Madison). Beginning at 5:00 p.m., the Underground folks will share delicious, inspired food and drink with us. It’s free to join in the fun and everyone is welcome; reservations are not necessary. We’re wishing you a season packed with sunshine, good food and community!

With Gratitude,
