It’s a little hard to believe that we’re on the cusp of summer when it’s difficult to say for sure that we even had a spring! But here we are, embarking on another summer in our beautiful region. Though we’ve all been enduring the seemingly endless cold weather and unrelenting rainfall, now we can finally break out of our homes and into our gardens, playgrounds, canoes, patios, farmers markets—you name it. And best of all, we get to reconnect with nature and each other (maybe over a great meal!). All things we’ve been craving for months.
In this issue, you’ll find stories of connection, cooperation and good food. Whether it’s connecting with the season’s bounty through a new recipe (Recipe Index p. 45) to feed those we love, learning about how farmers are connecting the dots with a “full circle crop” that produces not only food but also animal feed and fuel (Sunflowers, p. 36), or taking a trip into the food cart scene to see their cart-to-community connections (View from a Food Cart, p. 24)—there’s plenty here to inspire our hearts and kitchens this summer.
As this edition marks our third year of publishing, I’m incredibly grateful to our contributors for all the energy they pour into each issue of Edible Madison and to our advertisers for their support of our mission and the local food movement. It’s truly a web of connections that make this magazine possible, enabling us to spread the word about how important it is to be connected to our farmland, food culture and communities.
Because when we are truly connected, cooperating and following nature’s lead, we all benefit.
With gratitude,
Jamie Lamonde
