Publisher’s Letter: Summer 2014

Publisher's Letter

All around us—green landscapes have returned, sunrays replace our heavy coats, chirps, peeps and buzzes fill the air and gardens are growing. Welcome, summer! The anticipation of the season’s harvest fuels farmers and eaters alike. The promise of enjoying the abundance of fresh, local foods of our region as they each become available has us on the edge of our seats and is enough to make anyone beeline to their nearest farmers market, empty bag in hand.

And what other food embodies the promise of the season quite like a homemade pie? In this issue, Terese Allen takes us on a journey to explore Wisconsin’s pie history, culture, and the creativity, mystery and freedom of pie creation (p. 30). And she introduces us to two sisters dedicated to playing detective and delivering delight in the form of sweet and savory pies featuring local ingredients (p. 38). When we visited the humble sisters, their giggles were contagious and their pie case teemed with promise!

Also in this issue, we visit the back of the house at Bunky’s Café as they celebrate their 10-year anniversary (p. 40), and we get inspiration from Megan Cain, the Creative Vegetable Gardener, for turning our yards into groceries (p. 26).

All of us here at Edible Madison wish you a summer filled with goodness, laughter and memory-making. We hope you get to savor all of the season’s food promises.

With gratitude,

Jamie Lamonde
