According to my unscientific research (Google), the food blogging world seems to be dominated by women—creative mamas, gardeners, chefs, businesswomen, fitness gurus— all with a passion for cooking quality food for the people they love. It’s grown so much in the last five years that there’s now a nationwide women-blogger online network and conference series called BlogHer. For the Wisconsin-based women below, sharing their delicious discoveries may have begun with a small group of friends, family or like-minded folks, but they have since grown into an impressive following.
The Cheese Underground: Self-proclaimed “cheese geek” Jeanne Carpenter is founder of Wisconsin Cheese Originals. Jeanne knows her cheese, and Cheese Underground is the place to find her most recent cheesy discoveries and dairy industry news. But this isn’t simply boring announcements and where to buy that new cheese; Jeanne digs to find the deeper story (good or not so good) behind each topic, from the first Door County artisan cheese shop to the final year of the Dairy Business Innovation Center. Acknowledging the successes and challenges of local businesses, and especially recognizing the dedicated people who make Wisconsin cheeses so special—it’s these deeper stories written in Jeanne’s fun voice which make this blog a gem.
The Girls’ Guide to Guns and Butter is written by Sofya Hundt, who was born in Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic, and now farms and raises her family in Southwest Wisconsin. She writes about and photographs everything from gardening and mothering to homesteading, hunting and fishing—and yes, guns and butter. My favorite part: in the FAQ section, in reference to her recipes which aren’t afraid of animal fats, someone asked, “But what about your figure?” Her reply: “To be completely honest, I don’t care in the slightest, and I suggest that you don’t either. A small bottom is a social construct and has no bearing on the actual level of personal fulfillment and reproductive success.” Wiser words were never spoken.
Tallgrass Kitchen: “Having fun in the kitchen, prairie-style. That’s what I’m about,” writes Anna Bates. And recognition as one of Babble.com’s Top 100 Food Mom Blogs hasn’t changed this down-home mama of two young boys. Involving the kids in everything from the garden to the shopping to the cooking, Anna shows that it is indeed possible to return to the authentic, healthful, delicious roots of beautiful yet kid-friendly food. (Wish I’d had her no-pink-powder Pink Lemonade recipe on those 100-degree days this summer!) And would you believe her son likes kale? If only there was an award for that feat.
While we don’t have space to write about each and every food blog in Wisconsin, check out an amazing list put together by the folks at BURP! Where Food Happens for other blogs to add to your RSS feed.
